Dear Team Members:
Some recent and planned future activities:
The District 5 VOD/Patriot Pen/Teacher of the Year Awards Dinner was held at Post 3917 on Friday, January 6th. Winners from our Post submissions included: High School Teacher of the Year, David Kennington and Patriot Pen winner, Kelly Tyler. They went on to State level competition, but we didn’t receive notice of the winners as of this publication date. Stay tuned….
We had several VFW members and spouses/friends attend the New Year’s Eve party at the invitation of The Retired Enlisted Association (TREA). There was a good turn out, with a delicious prime rib dinner, listening and dancing music by Lone Wolf and his associate, John Smith, champagne at midnight, and a breakfast buffet. They also had a raffle for several nice gifts. Our own Don Christian won a $250 cash prize. Way to go, Don!
The annual New Year’s Day black-eyed peas & corn bread lunch went well with a good turn out. Thanks again to Harry and Barbara Johnson for organizing, cooking, and serving this traditional fare.
We strive to do “theme” dinner/dances whenever we can. The latest was the Hawaiian Luau on January 20th. What a wonderful dinner and dance! Special recognition goes to our “Friends of the Post”, Vaughn and Taan McClain for organizing, purchasing the food, and helping to cook the meal. They had lots of support from our other “Friends” and members Gerda, Fran, Shirley & Frank, and Rita & Chris (Art). Good job, guys!
We had a good turn out at the Saturday, January 21st breakfast, program and Post meeting. The next one will be on Saturday, February 18th. This one will have a special program. Ms. Patty Spiers, from the organization From Mists of Time - - Capturing history through storytelling from those who were there, will give a presentation and show a video of World War II veterans that she has interviewed. We hope all of you WWII veterans and POWs, and spouses can attend this very interesting event.
Starting in March, we will go back to our normal 3rd Monday night of the month meetings at 7 P.M., with a free light supper starting at 6 P.M.
State of Accomplishments for 2011
From time-to-time, people will ask: What are some of the things we do to support Veterans? Here is a partial list of our participation in veteran and non-veteran activities in 2011 alone: Donations to the American Military Family Organization, the Crawford Memorial, St Barbara’s Day ball, Ft Carson memorial, national VFW Military Service for Operation Uplink, Unmet Needs and Military Assistance Program, All Patient’s Day in Pueblo (money and needed items), member of Crawford House Board of Directors, food donations to the Crawford House, visits to middle and high school Veteran’s Day programs, scholarships, medals and certificates presented to UCCS ROTC and several local high school JROTC programs, sponsored the Rocky Mountain Honor Flight luncheon, the Department of Colorado Voice of Democracy dinner, support to Pearl Harbor veterans meetings and events, participated in four parades, placement of American flags on veterans headstones for Memorial Day, Americanism programs at local elementary schools, Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans program at Ft Carson, supported the 13th Air Support Operations Squadron with donations of requested items for the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the annual veterans Stand-down Day in support of needy veterans, to name a few.
Sincerely,
Ron Marshall
