Supporting All Veterans And Their Families
Commander's Column
Dear Comrades
The Holidays are upon us! The year 2011 has been filled with fun events, most recently, the many Veterans Day events. What a change from 10 years ago – now veterans are “thanked for their service”, the Veterans Parade had 102 units and over 4000 marchers with a big crowd cheering their way. The Veterans Day Breakfast was a huge success, thanks to Ron, Art, Skip, David and LeRoy who came in early to prepare the breakfast. I hope you read the nice article in the Gazette from the reporter who came to breakfast and interviewed our veterans from WWII to Afghanistan. I had the privilege of representing the VFW at the El Paso County Commissioners Board Meeting where they approved a resolution proclaiming November 11 as Veterans Day. We sent teams of veterans to middle and high schools to help “remember” veterans.
Ladies Auxiliary President's Column
Dear Auxiliary Sisters,
My sincere apologies to all for reporting in our last newsletter the wrong name and state for our National Auxiliary President. Her correct name is Gwen Rankin and she is from the great state of California.
Our Auxiliary Halloween Dinner/Dance fundraiser for our National Children’s Home was once again a great success. We had many clever costumes and it was difficult for the judges to pick the six winners. Our Veterans Day Breakfast was well attended and we even managed to get some press coverage from the Gazette! We provided Thanksgiving Dinner Baskets for the seven families (including 18 children) at Family Life Center. They are always so grateful to receive them and send back wonderful heartwarming thank you notes. We will be providing food baskets and gift cards to Family Life again at Christmas. Be sure to join us for our dinner and dance on Friday, November 25, to celebrate the day after Thanksgiving and the Commander’s birthday!
